This is an Early Intervention Program designed to give parents the knowledge of a variety of upper limb therapy methods and provide individualised support to enable parents to confidently carry out a guided upper limb therapy treatment block with their child.
We have designed this program to take full advantage of neuroplasticity and maximize potential future developmental effects, it is essential to intervene as early as possible in children who show a preference in which upper limb they use and are suspected to have or have been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
Current NHS wait times often leave parents feeling unsure on how to complete therapy successfully and unable to access regular support. We designed this course to support parents on the therapy journey they are embarking with their child, to give them the knowledge and confidence so that they can complete well researched and effective therapy at home whilst having easily accessible support from specialists in their childs condition.
Among the various approaches to improve arm and hand function in infants with Cerebral Palsy is constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT - the use of constraints on less affected limbs) and Bimanual therapy (training of both extremities in coordination).
Research shows brief sessions of parent-delivered, infant-initiated, goal-directed, success-motivated and repetitive activity in enriched sensory environments are effective, while respecting fundamental principles of infant development and home life.
Our baby beginnings programs is based on the APPLES upper limb program which has show great results from soft casting the upper limb for a prolonged period each day and completing 30mins of therapy.
Our Reaching Milestones program uses Modified CIMT and Bimanual which has many positive RCT’s and is mentioned in the Nice guidelines for treatment for CP.
Parent administration of the intervention helps preserve the integrity of early parent-child relationships, critical to establishment of infants' sense of self, safety, and independence. It also gives parents the confidence to continue with therapy long after the guided course has ended.
